CyclingforRekko returns to Italy (Recco)

ahhhh Buongiorno!

Matteo and CyclingforRekko are back to Italy for a little Easter (post Easter actually) break and training (I need some muscles in my leg to cross Europe on the bike!) and eating (somebody gave me orders to get “rounder” or fluffier) and tanning (I feel like a Stracchino and I don’t like it! Do you know what stracchino is?) and planning ( I will try to get some more people involved in the initiative) and studying(let’s not forget about the upcoming university exams O.o).

stracchino

There is not much difference between Manchester and Recco a part for: The sun, The sea, People driving on the right side of the road, over 60 people all over the place, Fiat cars rolling all around, no 1 pound stores, no betting shop (or at least very few of them) , good coffee (Oh yeah, good coffee!) in almost every bar, no one addressing me with “mate, pal, kid..” (I read a nice article about this issue on Monday newspaper actually) , and yeah again, THE SUN, no double Decker buses, no Manchester united/city supporters,   Genoa and Sampdoria football supporters, No Range Rovers cars, many scooters and Ape Piaggio cars, some 500, g0od coffee (yeah again!), and a good dose of slowliness. Yes Slowliness.

Ape car

This is the main difference (which is not always positive, try to understand me) that you feel when you come back to Italy and in particular to a small town like Recco. Everything goes slow, relatively slow. People don’t grab a coffee and run, people take a coffee and chat with whoever they found inside . The supermarket experience is very far from the Aldi style of experience in UK. Here you go to “Coop” and dance, you move around with your big trolley, you cue to get the ham (and chat ) you cue for the cheese( and chat) you cue to pay (and chat). The cashier (which is the one you meet every morning or so and most probably was your class mate, school friend, ex boyfriend/girlfriend) scan your items with cure (very far from the Aldi style!!) and chat with you (not always , but very often).

Cuing in a supermarket

Over 60 people are the king of the roads, footpath and bar tables : they are everywhere! Which it’s quite a clash compared with England and you can’t fail to notice it.

Also, about my return here I would like to say how AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL is to fly with the plane into Genova Airport:

Genova Airport

The plane reach the seashore almost over Savona then it does a long and panoramic turn bringing you over Sestri Levante and then flying over the coast towards Genova Airport.

Once the plane gets over Genova you feel you could grasp the cranes in Genova harbour and the Lanterna

Cranes in genoa harbour

to then glide over the multitude of containers that separate the Airport from the industrial airport. Genoa airport itself is pretty disgusting and ugly especially if compared with (Paris, Madrid etc) but hey, still good we have one!

Now, after my first ride on the bike along the “Via Aurelia” towards Genoa, with a nice stop for a Coffee with some other cyclists, and after a full meal prepared by my mum I am ready to tackle “What is next” which probably will consist of some study and hopefully meeting with some friends.

I will be back writing soon,

Thanks for taking the time to read 🙂

Something about…Genova!

Hi!

Morning post today !

I woke up and I felt the urge of giving you some info about Genova. Genova will be the final stage of my 1800km ride in May. I am from Recco, a small city 15km from Genova.

Recco

Genua (in latin) it’s the 6th largest city in Italy (population wise). It’s symbols are the Lantern and the San George Cross usually represented between two lyons .

  The Lantern of Genova

The city is nestled between the mountains and the Mediterranean sea and it’s harbour is one of the most important in Italy. In the past it has been described as the “Domninant” or the “Superb”.

The city gave birth between the others to Cristoforo Colombo, Giuseppe Mazzini and Goffredo Mameli .

The more modern history saw the city hosting the 1992 Expo, the G8 summit in 2001 and European Culture capital in 2004.

The city urbanistic is characterized by the “Centro Storico” the most ancient part of the city. This part of the city is characterized by many hystorical buildings and i “Caruggi”.

Porta Soprana , entrance to the “Centro Storico”. (On the right , Colombos house)

The typical structure of a “Caruggio” the small street that compose the historical centre of Genova.

Thanks to it’s rich past the city is attracting more and more tourists every year, also benefiting by the numerous attractions not far from Genova (5 Terre, Camogli, Portofino, Pisa and much more).

From a sportive point of view, the city has two teams Genoa (the oldest football team in Italy) and Sampdoria, both playing in the Italian mayor football league.

This is a very superficial description, If you are willing to know more, just ask me and I will tell you more! 🙂

Once again , please share the page and if you can , help our initiative with a donation !

Matteo

Unusual Guide of the places on CyclingForRekko route.

I think it’s high time to write a few words about the main cities Matteo is going to cross on his way to Genoa. I decided to share with you some weird, more or less popular facts about those cities. Let’s start from the beginning!

TAMWORTH – This exact city was mentioned by great William Shakespeare in his famous tragedy “Richard III”. Act V, Scene II, Line 15.

“Fellows in arms, and my most loving friends, bruised underneath the yoke of tyranny, thus far into the bowels of the land have we march’d on without impediment; And here receive we from our father Stanley Lines of fair comfort and encouragement. The wretched, bloody, and usurping boar, that spoil’d your summer fields and fruitful vines, swills your warm blood like wash, and makes his trough in your embowell’d bosoms, this foul swine Lies now even in the centre of this isle, near to the town of Leicester, as we learn from Tamworth thither is but one day’s marchIn God’s name, cheerly on, courageous friends, to reap the harvest of perpetual peace by this one bloody trial of sharp war.”

I hope you feel more educated now.

We’re moving down to OXFORD now. There is a reason why Oxford was not bombed by Germans during Second World War. Hitler had a cunning plan of using Oxford as his capital in case of conquering England. Nice try!

Next one on the map will be NEWHEAVEN famous for its The New Heaven LifeBoa which is among the oldest ones in Britian and was comissioned in 1803. Personally I think that the more interesting fact is that “Graduate” author, American writer Charles Webb is a resident of that English city. If you would like, along with a little donation you can give Matteo your copy of “Graduate” so he can knock on Mr Webb’s door in your name and ask for signing the book. Casually.

After getting on French grounds first stop will be in DIEPPE, which is famous because of its delicious seafood. Two dishes to remember: “Marmite Diepois” – fish and seafood stewed in cream, cider and oniones and “Moules Mariniere” – mussles in a wine, shallot and cream sauce.

Then we’re moving to AMIENS, which is a home of a writer Jules Verne and the largest Christmas Market in Northern France. I couldn’t pick two more random facts.

After Amiens there will be stop in REIMS, which is believed to be world’s capital of champagne. Never mind of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals.

We’re keep moving down to TROYES, which is the home of the luxurious brand with green crocodile logo. Have a guess which one I’m talking about!

In DIJON, which is next on the route there is plenty of the best quality mustard. We are also collecting the orders! Any of the supporters would like to get a little mustard souvenir from France?

LYON, is a home of modern cinema. Yes people, this is the place where two creative geniuses known as Lumier Brothers, improved on Edison’s invention and were smart enough to quickly apply for patent in France and England to keep their baby safe. Unfortunately Matteo will not have time to visit Lumier Museum, but anytime you are around Lyon, go and enjoy it!

The last French stop will be in GRENOBLE. Now, there is one interesting fact about the city. During the French Revolution, Grenoble was rebaptized Grelibre. The people wanted nothing to do with nobles and royalty. “Libre”, which is French for “free,” made the city sound much more revolutionary.

Then we’re already in Italy, Matteo’s homeland. First stop will be in TURIN, which is also believed to be “DETROIT of ITALY”. I’m wondering if any one Italian people ever heard of that…

Then we’re moving to ALESSANDRIA which is a host of annual Fraskettando SkaBlues Jazz Festival and even Blues Brothers performed there!

And then we’re nearly at the end of the journey in GENOA. Here I am only going to quote Charles Dickens who apparently said about the city: I would never have thought that I would have become attached to the stones of the Genoan streets, and to think of the city with affection, as the place in which I had spent many hours of peace and happiness.

Hopefully we’ll finish the initiative with Matteo in excellent state, safe and sound back in his hometown and with enough money to help REKKO build the ambulatory!

You know how to support us guys, so let’s do it!

Today training!

Buongiorno!

This morning I woke up in one of those beautiful sunny morning that are so rare in Manchester. It didn’t take me long, to decide to jump on my bike (A beautiful but a bit small, yellow road bike) using as an excuse, the delivery of hot coffee and muffins to a supporter of cyclingforrekko  😀     .

After the delivery, feeling good, I met two cyclist and after joining them, I found myself in a 100km ride around the peakdistrict. Beautiful (this is how it looks like)

It was a great morning, that increased even more my confidence regarding the europe-crossing bike ride! Of course, at that point, I will have to ride at least 100km a day for 15 days, a little bit different but….
