More About Crazy and Creative People Supporting Others!

The idea behind CyclingForRekko is to gather the funding to build the ambulatory in Sarachoch. It is also an idea of crossing Europe on a bike to do so. Thinking about that for longer than ten seconds brings only one thought to my mind – THIS IS MADDNESS. It’s 1500km of rain, wind, sun, pain, solitude and annoying people in the comfortable cars. It’s 1500km for REKKO.

So to prove that there are some equally crazy people among billions living on this planet that decided to do something unique to support others I prepared another little LIST of RANDOM MAD CHARITY INITIATIVES. So we don’t feel so lonely!

1. THE HERO INITIATIVE

“The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.”

2. THE SKETCHTRAVEL.

The Sketchtravel is a unique international charity art project.
This red sketchbook was passed from one artist’s hand to another like an Olympic torch in an artistic relay through 12 countries over 4 and half years.

This traveling museum contains the personal visions of 71 exceptional illustrators, animators and comic book artists, including artists such as Bill Plympton, James Jean, Rebecca Dautremer, Glen Keane, Frederick Back, and Hayao Miyazaki. Initiated by illustrators Dice Tsutsumi (Japan) and Gerald Guerlais (France), the project will culminate in an auction of the original book in Brussels on October 17, 2011. Proceeds from the auction and royalties from the book’s publication will be donated to the international literacy non-profit, Room to Read.

3. NOW, THAT WAS MADDNESS!

OLHA TSEIUKOVA, 32 years old Ukrainian woman, performed an extraordinary “escape from Alcatraz Island. She had to swim 1.5 miles in ice-cold water from the island with the jail of the same name located on it to San Francisco shore. It was not done for entertainment or in search of thrill, but to collect money to help Ukrainian homeless people.

Tseiukova has two higher educations and a Swedish institute diploma. She works for a well-known international oil and gas company, and this year she was transferred to Great Britain, where she is now responsible for commercial matters in the North Sea and Ireland. Tseiukova is also chair of the charity’s Ukrainian Trustees, which provides a safety net for homeless people in Ukraine. It is interesting that two years ago Tseiukova did not even know how to swim, but once she set this challenge, there was nothing to stop her from doing it. At the present, thanks to her swim, she collected almost 9,000 dollars, and this money is going to be used for needs of the homeless in Ukraine.

Please Matteo, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING THE SAME. CYCLING IS MORE THAN FINE!

4. CHOCOLATE CHARITY – Genius thought of that!

“Chocol’art, the children’s Charity Initiative where ‘chocolate meets art for a cause’ is coming back to Beirut for the second year running. Artists, designers, fashionistas, creative souls, photographers, chocolate and sweet stuff brands will be encouraged to gather and participate in a festival of creativity and fun in October 2012 in Beirut Souks. The ticketed event will be held in association with Solidere to raise funds for the local charity,

Brave Heart Fund http://www.braveheartfund.org.

Brave Heart supports Children that suffer from congenital heart disease. On in one-hundred children are born each year with congenital heart disease. 70% will not live till their first birthday. In 7 years, Brave Heart has covered the cost of 1,300 lifesaving surgeries to such children. “We are extremely proud to be supporting such a worthy children’s charity in Lebanon for our second Chocol’art event in Beirut” commented Chocol’art founder Mohammed (Mo) Fadlallah.

Let’s say something about Manchester!

Manchester is the city where I have been living for three years now. The city where I attended university. The city from where I am going to leave and therefore it deserves a post:

With a population of 2.2milion people (Greater Manchester), Manchester has the third largest urban area of UK. Manchester inhabitants are called Mancunians and they either support Manchester City or Manchester United: Football here is more then a game, it’s faith (and always a good reason for a pint).

Manchester was founded by the romans and saw it’s golden age in the 19th century with the industrial revolution. It is crossed by many different canals that were used to transport products in and out of the city.

Manchester is also one of the UK capitals of music (one of the reason of the rivalry with Liverpool ).

Manchester has seen the world first railway station.

Manchester is served by two universities.

Manchester is bike friendly.

Manchester is rainy

Hi (Ciao as we would say in italy!)

Here in Manchester today we are blessed with the second incredible day of sun! Beautiful!

My apologies for having missed a few days on the blog but I have been following so many things !

In these days we received support from quite a few pro cyclist which are going to send their photos with the T-shirts soon!

Also we continue to receive approval for the initiative from different entities in Guatemala, which promise to create a supporting team in loco.

The most important news for the blog is that from today there is a new Administrator, Kasia!  She is a proper blogger, Script Writer and Coffee addicted. I am sure she will provide you all with some good content 🙂

Now, I need to go and attend my finance class!

Updates about 100days before the start!

Hi ( Ciao, Hello, goeiedag, salam, ani sogomen, 你好, goede morgen, สวัสดีครับ )

We are about 100 days from the morning in which I will jump on the bike heading south.

As they would say here in Manchester “So far, so good!”. Nothing comes easy, we all know it but , as of today we have been able to:

– Reach over 130 followers on twitter

-Reach 96 “likes” on Facebook

– Raise 42euros on Buonacausa.org/cyclingforrekko

-Create a charity symbol

– Find a sponsor for the cycling kit

– Secure a couple of places where to sleep along the way to Italy (thank to two very kind friends of cyclingforrekko)

I would say this is a very VERY exciting start and I can’t wait to see what else we will be able to do together!

Keep in touch using the platform you prefer,
